The Covid-19 pandemic continues to create uncertainty for the country's higher education sector. In addition to the cost of shifting to online learning, massive losses in revenue and unpredictable 2021 enrolments will see universities face increasing financial strain. For current and prospective students, lockdown-related job losses will impact their families' ability to afford fees and accommodation. Education union leaders and educators have paid tribute to the late Emanuel A Fatoma. Fatoma’s sudden passing on 6 July came as a shock to many of us and to his former colleagues and friends from Africa and around the world.
The introduction of the fourth industrial revolution has already been transforming the education sector over the past two decades, with technology allowing students to access education from anywhere at any time. This, however, has been fast tracked due to the impact of Covid-19, with institutions having to close their doors to stop the spread. Although it has been an adjustment for both students and teachers, technology is revolutionising education and paving a way towards a better future in learning.
