And the <a href="https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-09-13-south-africas-literacy-rates-plunge-deeper-as-learning-time-is-lost/" target="_blank">statistics</a> are sadly alarming - eight out of ten grade 4 learners can't read for meaning, while the adult literacy rate is 87%.
